Researchers and students are confronted with intense complexity during the empiric research process and, in addition, they must make many decisions.
Very often, they fail because of their inadequate understanding of the system as a whole and their failure to anticipate long-range and secondary effects - especially during changes in context.
We created the Empiric Research Map for students and researchers to facilitate the making of important decisions, problem solving and the management of uncertainty during the empiric research process.
The Empiric Research Map aims to develop beneficial preconditions for decisions from a holistic perspective and presents the empiric research system as a whole. Furthermore, the Empiric Research Map aims to help make possible a better understanding of the system, reducing its complexity and sharpening the researcher’s role perception.
By providing a visual depiction of a systematically structured process, the Empiric Research Map aids orientation and navigation by making it possible to anticipate the intertwined long-range and secondary effects more easily. Also, the Empiric Research Map makes it easier to react more quickly and to achieve research goals in cases involving a changing context.
From a didactic perspective, the Empiric Research Map provides additional value to researchers and teachers in the context of higher education as well as to students worldwide.
The Empiric Research Map is visually depicted on only one A3 piece of paper and it maps two fundamental and interacting processes that are embedded in a constantly changing context: The research strategy, which defines the role of the researcher in the process as well as the form of the research “toolbox.” The research process, beginning with the identification and formulation of the research goals and continuing on to the point of the development of new tools and concepts for the working world and publications for the scientific community, all of which result in new phenomena and new research goals.
Lines, strokes and arrows provide a visual depiction of the connections between the steps of each of the procedures and processes. A purposefully chosen colour system reveals the integration of the system and enhances the possibility that a researcher will more accurately anticipate long-range and secondary effects and engage in a better examination of possible scenarios.
